Makinde immortalisation of Ajimobi is timely and honourable | Aderemi Ladigbolu

In the final paragraph of a July 2020 article, entitled: Ajimobi, Makinde and the Beauty of Intellectual Prudence, this writer wrote ”Finally, in spite of the avoidable brouhaha over Ajimobi’s burial site, I am sure the former governor is truly resting in peace, knowing that the people of his beloved Oyo State are in good hands, and also knowing that his legacies are intact, and actually being built upon. What remains for Makinde to do is to appropriately immortalise the memory of this great man”.

With the announcement by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, on March 31, at the second convocation ceremony of the state government-owned First Technical University, Ibadan that the institution had been renamed Abiola Ajimobi First Technical University, in honour of his late predecessor, the governor had indeed immortalised the memory of Senator Ajimobi in the best way possible.

This article, however, is neither about the unique achievements of the late Ajimobi, among which was the establishment of another premier university in Ibadan, which now bears his name, nor is it about the visionary leadership of the first two-term governor of the pacesetter state, that rightly earned him the indisputable sobriquet of Koseleri, which literally translates to a jinx breaker. Rather, the main interest of this writer is to examine the political phenomenon that Makinde is steadily evolving into through the prism of that historic announcement and what this portends for the future democratic governance in Nigeria.

To be clear, Makinde from the get go had demonstrated that he is not your typical Nigerian politician. In the build-up to his first electoral success in 2019, his campaign was devoid of exaggerated or unrealistic promises. He also shunned the usual desperation and the win-at-all-cost attitude of the average politician. Also, as I observed in the 2020 article, Makinde is the only politician in my memory to have openly and unequivocally acknowledged the achievements of his predecessordespite belonging to an opposition political party

The relevant part of tharticle under reference further reads: “For me, the most striking part of that message (referring to Makinde’s condolence message to the family of his predecessor) is where Makinde, in a manner most uncharacteristic of politicians, said the following about the late Ajimobi, ‘Surely, he will be remembered for leaving a blueprint for some of the activities that our administration is now undertaking’.”

“What manner of politician openly acknowledges the inherent benefits of projects started by his main opponent and constantly restates his commitment to completing them all, even to point of admitting that he has adopted part of his developmental blueprint? It can only be a politician who puts the welfare of the people over and above politics in every regard,” the article had further observed.

And did he walk his talk? A good answer to this will be the current state of the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency, which was established in 2016 by the Ajimobi administration with a vision of achieving Universal Health Coverage and access to affordable and quality health care for all residents of the state regardless of their economic status. When Makindeassumed office, he immediately demonstrated his readiness to sustain this worthy legacy of his predecessor by resisting the predictable political pressure to remove the Executive Secretary of the agency, Dr Olusola Akande, who was appointed by Ajimobi. Today, the number of enrollees on the scheme has increased from 45,000 in 2019 to over 300,000, while Akande still remains in office.

On how much the Makinde administration has done to sustain the agency, Akande has this to say in a report by Newspeak, dated April 17, 2023. “When the present governor came in, he promised not to cancel anything good that the former administration put in place and he showed fidelity to that promise.Oyo State Health Insurance continues to progress under the present government and expansion has become wider, service delivery has become deeper and coverage has become enlarged.”

This particular uncommon virtue is what Governor Makinde had once again demonstrated by his timing of the announcement of the renaming of the hitherto First Technical University. A decent and principled politician that he is, he resisted the apparent temptation to make this predictably popular and a potentially game changing announcement during his re-election campaigndespite facing a highly uncertain fate and in dire need of every ounce of political capital he could muster.

Faced with a formidable opposition, which had been further buoyed and emboldened by the victory of its candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in the presidential election, as well as the rumoured decision of some ofhis major coalition partners to abandon him at the last minute, yet Makinde refused to be a political opportunist by announcing the renaming of the university before the election. Rather, he chose to do it at the most appropriate and auspicious moment and clearly not for sheer political gain.

Same goes for his principled stance on the issue of a southern presidency, which saw him brazenly opposing the presidential candidate of his own political party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, at the risk of enormous personal and political jeopardy. By ignoring the dictates of political expediency and wittingly putting his political future on the line in the fight for equity and justice, Makinde has proven beyond every shade of doubt that he ipolitician hewn out of a wood completely different from what we have become accustomed to.

Makinde’s record of achievements speaks for itself. But that is also not part of the purpose of this article. Nevertheless, it is no longer news that the 2023 governorship election in Oyo State, which renewed his mandate for another four-year term by a wide margin, was adjudged to be among the most peaceful and credible in the country. It is, therefore, safe to conclude that he won the election primarily on the strength of his performance.

Having fulfilled over 70 percent of his campaign promises in his first term, what Makinde must do next is not rest on his oars as most second-term governors are wont to do. This is the time for him to ensure the completion of all the legacy projectsstarted by him or his predecessors. Most importantamong these is the first phase (32km East End Wing)of the 110km economically superstrategic Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road, Ibadan, which successive administrations have failed to completesince former Governor Ladoja, after whom it is named, conceived the idea during his tenure between 2003 and 2007.

Others, which are equally importantinclude theproposed Dry Port at Moniya, close to Chief Obafemi Awolowo Train Station, for which his administration has already acquired the needed land and paid compensation to all the landownersthe expansive Government Reservation Areas being developed at all exits points along the Circular Road and in various other locations in Ibadanand in thefour zones of the state, including Oke-Ogun,OgbomoshoOyo and Ibarapa. Also of importanceare the abandoned Siloproject in Oyo town, which will enable farmers in Oyo and Oke Ogun axis storeand preserve their grains for large scale industrial use and exportation, and the Shell Gas Plant located on the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway, which will power the government’s industrialisation initiatives, as well asits Independent Power Projects.

The governor must also develop initiatives for tackling the solid waste management problem that has bedevilled the state capital for ages, while also ensuring the completion of the various channelisation projects embarked on by the Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project (IUFMP), especially the ongoing Agodi River and Ona River Channelisation in Ibadanas a means of finding a permanent solution to the often devastating perennial flooding beingexperienced in the capital city. Another laudable initiative, which must not be abandonedis the ‘Light Up Oyo’ project, which seeks to provide night-time lighting in all public spaces in the state, starting with identified black spots.

In additionOmituntun 2.0, as Makinde has christened his administration’s second termdevelopmental blueprint, must incorporate the timelycompletion of the multiple road reconstruction and rehabilitation projects spread across the length and breadth of the statePriority must also be given to the very strategic ones among them, including the 76.7km Iseyin-Fapote-Ogbomoso Road, which connects Oke-Ogun and Ogbomoso zonesthe 45.3km Saki-Ogbooro-Igboho Road, which connects Saki West, Saki East and Oorelope Local Government Areasthe 37.41km Beere-Olorunsogo-Amuloko-Akanran-Dagbolu Road; the 34.85km Oyo-Iseyin Road, which connects Oyo and Oke-Ogun Zones and also serves as the main artery for accessing the Fasola Agribusiness Industrial Hubthe 37.41km Beere-Olorunsogo-Amuloko-Akanran-Dagbolu Roadas well as the 35.53 km Ibadan-Iwo-Osogbo Road.

Finally, in the governor’s words on what the Oyo State people should expect from the second term of his administration: “Oyo State Roadmap to Sustainable Development 2023-2027 represents our covenant with the good people of Oyo State. The fulfilled promises stand as a surety for these added promises we are making. If we could fulfil over 70percent of our promises made in our first term, then you can rest assured that now that we have been there for our first tenure and fully understand the exigencies of governance, we will do even more. Yes, if we have done it before, we can do it again and do even more. Omituntun 2.0 promises to be an upgrade. We have heard people say that when politicians are given a second term in government, they often underperform. We can only speak for ourselves and say; we have laid the right foundations, and each promise made in this roadmap is well thought out and based on strategies that we know will work.”

Oyo State people, e kú ojú lọ́nà.

BREAKING: TINUBU RETURNS TO ABUJA, RECEIVED WITH FUNFAIR

President-Elect, Tinubu Returns To Nigeria From Europe

Tinubu, who was officially out of the country since after the Governorship elections, returned on Monday after one month in Europe.

President-Elect, Bola Tinubu arrives at the Abuja airport on Monday, April 24, 2023.

The aircraft that conveyed the former Lagos State governor touched down at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja at 04:30pm on Monday.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart, who was officially out of Nigeria since March 22, returned about one month before his inauguration on May 29, 2023.

He returned with his wife, Senator Oluremi; and they were received by the Vice-President-Elect, Kashim Shettima; Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; amongst many other high-ranking members of the party.

The President-Elect was received by a cheery crowd of supporters decked up in party colours and paraphernalia.

On March 22, after controversy surrounded his whereabouts, Tinubu’s spokesman, Tunde Rahman said his principal travelled to Paris in France to rest and observe the lesser hajj but no photo of the President-Elect was made public while he was away.

Tinubu’s health has been a subject of controversy in the last two years. In 2021, Tinubu was away in the United Kingdom for over three months where he underwent surgery and therapy for a knee injury. He subsequently travelled to the UK and Paris a few times in 2022.

Pray For Tinubu’s Health, There Is Problem In APC – Party Chieftain.

A senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has claimed that the ruling party is dealing with internal issues ahead of President-elect Bola Tinubu and those elected in the recently concluded election on May 29.

This comes as a party stakeholder expressed concern for Tinubu, saying that the president-elect’s health status could change all permutations of the party as members of the 10th National Assembly jockey for the zoning of the Senate and House of Representatives.

The APC chieftain, a former member of the National Working Committee (NWC), stated that party stakeholders and elected 10th Assembly members should be concerned about the President-elect’s prolonged absence.

He said:

Were all things well, you would have seen those jostling for the leadership of the 10th Assembly visiting the President-elect wherever he was in the world.

WITHIN NIGERIA understands that a few weeks after the presidential election result was announced, Tinubu’s aide, Tunde Rahman, released a statement stating that his principal was travelling to France and UK to undertake rest and after which to the Muslim Holy Land for lesser Hajj.

He stated in the statement that Tinubu decided to rest in Paris and London after the hectic campaign and election season, and that the president-elect will also prepare to travel to Saudi Arabia for Umrah (Lesser Hajj) and Ramadan Fasting.

While away, the President-elect will also use the opportunity to plan his transition programme. He is expected back in the country soon.”

However, the President-elect has not started the transition programme,” the APC chieftain said.

What you have to know is that we have a problem in our party and that problem is likely to affect so many things.

As you can see, the NWC of our party is not in unity as you see allegations against the National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, from the National Vice Chairman North West, Salihu Lukman. Lukman is not alone in raising all those allegations against the National Chairman, New Telegraph quoted the party chieftain saying.

The former NWC member, who raised concerns about happenings in the APC, observed that many party members went for lesser hajj, and none of them visited Tinubu. "Is that not suggesting something"? he asked.

The party chieftain added:

"The former NWC member, who raised concerns about happenings in the APC, observed that many party members went for lesser hajj, and none of them visited Tinubu". Is that not suggesting something? he asked.

The party chieftain added:

"As you are aware, there was a recent report in the media that the President-elect was in a hospital in the USA, and no rebuttal has been given on that report".

But we will continue to pray for the good health of the President-elect while we expect the party to be more circumspect in this situation.

Pardon Me’: President Buhari Appeals To ‘Hurt’ Nigerians.

The President also thanked Nigerians for tolerating him in the last eight years while he steered the affairs of the nation.

Thirty-eight days to his exit from office, President Muhammadu Buhari has pleaded with Nigerians whom he must have hurt in the course of his duties to forgive him.

The President also thanked Nigerians for tolerating him in the last eight years while he steered the affairs of the nation.

He spoke on Friday at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, during his final Sallah homage by residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) led by the FCT Minister, Mohammed Bello.

Buhari hailed democracy as the best form of government, saying that without it, he could not have become president after already serving as military Head of State.

He said he considered the Sallah celebration as a good coincidence to say goodbye and to “thank you for tolerating me for eight years.”

President Buhari added, “I am counting the days. Democracy is a good thing otherwise how can somebody from the other side be a president for two terms? My hometown to Niger Republic is eight kilometres.

“I think this is a very good coincidence for me to say goodbye to you and to thank you for tolerating me for more than seven and half years now.

“I assure you, I have deliberately arranged to be as far away from you as possible not because I don’t appreciate the love you’ve shown to me, but because I think I’ve gotten what I have asked and I would rather quietly retire to my hometown.

“Having been a governor, minister and the president twice, I think God has given me an incredible opportunity to serve as your president. And I thank God for that.

“So, please, whoever feels I have done wrong to them, we are all humans. There is no doubt I hurt some people and I wish you will pardon me. And those that think that I have hurt them so much, please, pardon me.”

He reassured the nation that nothing would stop the May 29 handover date to the next administration.

The President had earlier joined other Muslim faithful to perform the Eid el-Fitr prayer on the parade ground of the Mambilla Barracks.

Buhari, who arrived on the ground around 9:10 am, was accompanied by some of his family members and personnel aides.

Others at the prayer ground included some members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), security chiefs, heads of paramilitary organisations and government officials.

How Peter Obi spent Easter in London Detention, implications

Peter Obi was accosted by immigration officials at Heartrow Airport who handed him a detention note and told him to step aside.

This was made known in a statement issued Wednesday by the Head, Obi-Datti Media, Diran Onifade.

Mr Onifade however said Peter Obi has since returned to Nigeria.

“The LP presidential candidate in the February 25 presidential poll arrived at the Heathrow Airport in London from Nigeria on Good Friday, April 7, 2023, and joined the queue for the necessary Airport protocols when he was accosted by immigration officials who handed him a detention note and told him to step aside,” Mr Onifade said.

According to the statement, Peter Obi was harassed by London immigration officials and placed in detention where he spent the Easter holidays

“He was questioned for a long time and it was very strange for a man who lived for over a decade in that country,” the statement said.

Possible implication for Peter Obi

Mr Onifade explained that the high implication of the offence is that the impersonator could be committing all kinds of weighty crimes and other dubious acts and it would be recorded in Obi’s name.

He emphasised that since the impersonator is still at large, the scenario is unimaginable as Peter Obi could be implicated in a series of forbidden acts and even be framed in a manner that could be a huge embarrassment to him, his family, his party, the Obedient movement, and Nigeria, where he currently and remains the conscience of the people.

Mr Onifade also reiterated that Mr Obi has been under all kinds of attack, since the presidential election in which he put up an outstanding showing coming third out of 18 contestants as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“…though his supporters and many other election watchers including international observers believed very strongly that he won the election but was manipulated out,” he added.

Possible plot against Peter Obi by government?

“Even the Federal Government who directed him to go to court even dispatched the Minister of Information Lai Mohammad to the United States to attempt at de-marketing him and accused him of treason,” the statement said.

Mr Onifade accused the government of bugging Mr Obi’s phone while possibly looking for information to portray him badly before a section of the country who had voted for him massively.

“As if they were not getting the desired results of denting his image, and possibly placing the traducers under a heavier conscience load, they tried to persuade him to leave the country and go take a rest,” he said, adding that it is also not impossible that those urging him to leave the country may have planted the impersonators ostensibly to tar the Eagle’s immaculate appearance.

“The Obi-Datti Media office will like to therefore assure all persons of goodwill especially the Obidients that the Rock is not deterred as he is ready to suffer the pain and remain even more determined to pursue whichever path his creator destined for him in Nigeria,” Mr Onifade said.

When contacted on phone, Mr Onifade said, “He experienced a delay at the airport because someone duplicated his details. But he has since returned to the country.”

Existing scourge

Peter Obi came third in the 25 February election but he, and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, who came second, are challenging the victory of Bola Tinubu of the ruling APC.

The LP presidential flag-bearer and supporters have come under attacks and criticisms for claiming he won the election without providing concrete evidence.

Early this month, the social media space, especially Twitter, was awash with controversy over a leaked telephone conversation (now dubbed “Yes Daddy”) between Mr Obi and the founder of Living Faith Church, David Oyedepo, a Bishop.

In the audio clip, Peter Obi was heard asking Bishop Oyedepo to help spread his campaign message to Christians in the South-west and parts of North-central.

Ahead of the presidential election, critics of Mr Obi have accused him of playing politics of ethnicity and religion, which he lost but has challenged in court.

Mr Obi denied playing politics of religion and ethnicity and asked his critics to provide evidence. The leaked file appears to have substantiated the position of the critics.

However, Peter Obi and his party’s Presidential Campaign Council described the leaked audio of the conversation between him and the cleric as ‘faked and doctored’ and that appropriate legal actions would be taken against Peoples Gazette, an online newspaper that first released the audio.

Within this period, the LP claimed Mr Obi has been under pressure to leave the country or face the prospect of being arrested on false charges of inciting insurrection in the country.

Six things Tinubu must do to reunite Nigeria.

The incoming Bola Tinubu administration faces an uphill task of reuniting a divided Nigeria.

There is a general belief among the populace that Nigeria has never been so divided than it is under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

In 2015 when President Buhari took over from then President Goodluck Jonathan, he made the infamous 97 percent statement, declaring that his appointments and infrastructural development across the country would be based on the votes he received across the regions.

Buhari made his first visit to the United States on July 22, 2015, where he addressed the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) on security and counterterrorism issues in Nigeria and West Africa, on July 22, 2015.

Fielding questions from members of the audience, the Nigerian leader was asked about inclusiveness in his administration and after struggling with the question, Buhari puzzled, and said, “inclusive?”

"I hope you have a copy of the election results. The constituents, for example, who gave me 97% [of the vote] cannot in all honesty be treated on some issues with constituencies that gave me 5%. I think these are political realities.”

Buhari was adjudged to be referring to the Igbo dominated South East, a region that voted massively for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate, Goodluck Jonathan in the election.

Buhari was adjudged to be referring to the Igbo dominated South East, a region that voted massively for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate, Goodluck Jonathan in the election.

Since his inauguration in 2015, Buhari’s appointment has continued to generate controversy among citizens who accuse the President of marginalization and disregard for Federal Character policy.

And this is against his vow to “belong to everybody” and “belong to nobody. Many Nigerians think he has not lived up to his promise.

The President in his nearly 8 years in office seems to have ignored diversity of the country, comprising multi-ethnic groups in the North and the South and also goes against the Constitution which recognised this diversity and enacted the Federal Character Commission Act.

According to public records, the Southeast and South South have marginal representation in the Buhari government, while the North takes the majority of the appointments.

Statistics available shows that the North West, the zone of the President, had the highest appointments in the outgoing government.

The outgoing administration also appeared to have taken sides, turned a blind eye or sympathised with a section of the elements who goes about killing, raping, maiming innocent citizens and destroying farmlands of their victims.

Buhari once said that had he not joined the armed forces, he would have simply settled as a cattle reader and this could be interpreted differently by anybody.

And Nigerians have begun to question the ability of the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to unite a system that has been so highly polarized to a scary extent that citizens could boldly stop their fellow citizens from voting during elections because they belong to one ethnic group or another.

There is a lot the incoming administration of Ahmed Tinubu could do to unite the country.

To reunite Nigeria and correct some of the damaging mistakes of the Buhari administration, DAILY POST considers seven (7) things the President-elect should be willing to do.

Support South East Senate Presidency: Tinubu should support the South East to produce the President of the 10th Senate. Tinubu ran and won the election on a platform that did not see anything wrong in the same faith ticket.

Bola Tinubu, a Yoruba Muslim and Kashim Shettima, a Muslim from the North East, will be pioneering the affairs of the country from May 29, and for equity and fairness, a Christian from the South East should be supported to become the country’s number 3 citizen. This will give the South East a sense of belonging in the incoming administration.

Reconciliation: In order to fulfill his campaign promise of being the President of all Nigerians no matter their political affiliations, religion or ethnicity, the president-elect should, through words and actions, reconcile the aggrieved section of the society, especially the youths, who are largely of the opinion that their mandate was stolen.

Immediately after the February 25 elections, Tinubu was reported to have set up committees to reconcile his camp with his challengers who lost to him in the presidential election, such as Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

The committees, comprising elders of the APC, are meant to begin to meet with co-contestants of the President-elect in a bid to assuage feelings. Tinubu should be able to go ahead with the reconciliation even after the Supreme Court might have ruled in his favour in cases filed by the other contestants

In the speech he delivered shortly after he was declared the winner of the presidential election, Tinubu extended a hand of fellowship to the supporters of his opponents in the election.

Shed-off bagages: Some of the aides of the president-elect are not helping matters in terms of calming the situation after the presidential election. Nigeria cannot be united in a situation some of the president-elect’s aides continue to generate unnecessary tension. At this point, there should be people trying to douse the situation and bring calmness. People who express their opinions about the election should not automatically become enemies, called all sorts of foul and disparaging names. The activities of some of the aides on social media have only added insult on top of injury. For instance, the likes of former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode and the current minister of State for Labour, Festus Keyamo, have turned themselves into attack dogs. But whatever their antics have not helped matters since after the Presidential election as their constant clashes with the Obidients and supporters of the Labour Party are generating tension. Notably, Fani-Kayode and Keyamo are not alone in this as Bayo Onanuga also needs to act presidentially.

Spread major works of development: The Buhari administration has been heavily criticized for being sectional the incoming administration should not toe such path. All the infrastructural development plans of the president-elect, as contained in his manifesto, should include every part of Nigeria, and equally distributed be it the places he received just 5 percent votes or in those places he got more votes. This will make the people see him as the unifier he has promised to be. So, it behoves the president-elect, Bola Tinubu to spread his major works of development across the country and not focus on only the places he won election.

Balanced appointment: Unlike the outgoing administration that allegedly sees some sections of Nigeria as better than the others in terms of appointments into key positions, including security services, the incoming government should correct this anomaly and make every part of the country have a sense of belonging. Although the Presidency has maintained that the decision to appoint or sack Service Chiefs and other officials was the President’s prerogative, Nigerians will feel more secure in their country knowing that their interests are well protected.

Youth-friendly policies: The incoming government should put in place youth-friendly policies that could help solve the ‘japa syndrome’. The incoming government should make Nigerians stay in their country and bridge the divide.

There has been a significant increase in the number of Nigerians migrating to the global West and given the opportunity, according to a survey by the Africa Polling Institute, more than 7 out of 10 Nigerians, especially the youths, would leave the country in search of a better living.

Many youths are dumping their country because of few employment opportunities and rising insecurity, hardship and hunger in the hopes of more viable prospects abroad.

A report from the National Bureau of Statistics (2020) said that youth unemployment for those aged 15-34 is at 42.5 per cent, with youth underemployment at 21.6 per cent. And this figure has sky-rocketed in 2023. Despite the fact that a large population of the Nigerian youth did not vote for Tinubu in the presidential election, the president-elect should ensure his policies draw the young people closer to his government.

OBASANJO SENDS FBI AFTER TINUBU FOR DRUG CASES

that seemed a truth, a report presently circulating online reveals the former President Olusegun Obasanjo has invited US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Nigeria to investigate Tinubu over drug case.
As a result, FBI agents are currently in Nigeria for Tinubu drug-related offense in America which he has made him to avoid America for years.

According to the short report, Obasanio vowed that a drug lord can never oversee the affairs of Nigeria once he is still alive, hence why he invited the FBI.

It was noted according to the report that Tinubu heard the information on time, a reason he departed to France before their arrival. The FBI has announced that they have alerted the France GOVERNMENT over Tinubu lawsuit.

I will continue With my Presidential Ambition Despite Criminal Charges. -Trump

Former US president Donald Trump, having been criminally charged in New York, pledged Tuesday to “never drop out” of the 2024 race.

The former US president Donald Trump departs the Trump tower ahead of his arraignment at the Manhattan Criminal Court in New York City on April 4, 2023.

Former US president Donald Trump, having been criminally charged in New York, pledged Tuesday to “never drop out” of the 2024 race for the White House, and insisted Joe Biden is not fit to run again.

The Republican real estate magnate, facing 34 felony counts in New York over alleged hush money paid to an adult film actress, told Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson that nothing would prevent him from running — even a conviction.

“I’d never drop out,” he said. “It’s not my thing. I wouldn’t do it.”

Trump, 76, in his first major interview since being arrested and fingerprinted last week, cast doubt on whether Democrat Biden, 80, would be in the 2024 race.

“I don’t see how it’s possible,” he said.

“It’s not an age thing… I don’t think he can.

“I just don’t see Biden doing it from a physical or a mental standpoint. I don’t see it.”

Trump and other senior Republicans have repeatedly doubted Biden’s mental acuity and apparent frailty.

Right-wing outlets like Fox News frequently highlight his verbal flubs and moments where he appears to have lost his train of thought.

Throughout his own presidency, Fox offered an uncritical forum for Trump to air his grievances, with the then-commander-in-chief sometimes calling in unannounced to shows and talking at length to presenters.

The relationship cooled after Trump’s defeat to Biden at the ballot box in 2020 but has steadily grown again as the Republican nominating contest heats up.

The interview, part two of which is expected to be broadcast on Wednesday, comes weeks after texts emerged showing Carlson speaking disparagingly about Trump after his election loss.

The messages were uncovered as part of a $1.6 billion lawsuit brought by Dominion Voting Systems against the Rupert Murdoch-run Fox News over its coverage of Trump and his allies’ unfounded claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 election.

“We are very, very close to being able to ignore Trump most nights. I truly can’t wait,” says one Carlson text message sent two days before a Trump-supporting mob — inspired by the then president’s false claims of a “stolen election” — invaded the US Capitol in Washington.

“I hate him passionately,” says another.

Resident Doctors Tackle Reps, Oppose Five-Year Compulsory Service.

The doctors also decried the non-payment of salaries of members by the Federal Government.

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has opposed the House of Representative Bill mandating Nigeria-trained medical and dental practitioners to practice for five years before being granted full licence.

NARD made its position known in a communique issued at the end of the emergency extended National Officers’ Committee (NOC) meeting of the association which was held virtually over the weekend.

According to the statement obtained on Monday by Channels Television, the resident doctors expressed shock by the action of the sponsor of the bill, Honourable Ganiyu Johnson (APC/Lagos).

The doctors also decried the non-payment of salaries of members by the Federal Government as the current administration gradually winds down.

“The extended NOC observed with shock and disappointment, the infuriating attempts by Honourable Ganiyu Abiodun Johnson and the Federal House of Representatives to enslave Nigerian-Trained Medical Doctors for five years post-graduation before they can be issued full practicing licenses or allowed to travel abroad if they so wished,” the communique read.

“The extended NOC decried the inability of the Federal Government to review the CONMESS salary structure despite several promises, even with the imminent change in Government.”

NARD also registered its worry over the downgrading of the membership certificate of the West African Postgraduate Colleges by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

On a positive note, it commended the Ekiti and Bayelsa State Governments for the adoption and implementation of the Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) as well as the payment of the reviewed hazard allowance by the Ekiti State Government.

It pledged to summon an extraordinary National Executive Council Meeting in the next two weeks to review the issues raised and determine the next line of action.

Tinubu’s supporters boil as UberFacts circulates cocaine business facts to global audience

Tinubu’s supporters boil as UberFacts circulates Nigerian president-elect’s cocaine business to global audience

Supporters of Nigeria’s president-elect are lashing out on Twitter after UBerFacts, a reliable facts-promoting platform, published Bola Tinubu’s legal woes with the U.S. authorities which had him forfeit $460,000 ill-gotten gains from cocaine deals to the American government in 1993.

“In 1993, Bola Ahmed Tinubu surrendered $460,000 to the US government after a Chicago court found the income came from heroin trafficking,” UberFacts shared with its 13.5 million global audience at midnight on Monday. The platform attached an article from Peoples Gazette that detailed Mr Tinubu’s criminal run-in with the foreign authorities.

The matter, which jumped up to the number one Twitter trend, has rankled Mr Tinubu’s team as high-ranking members of his campaign team — presumably deciding how to best respond and counter the post — have kept mum while the lower-level supporters are unleashing vitriol on UberFacts’s Twitter account in an effort to ridicule and discredit the platform.

The usual surrogates -Bayo Onanuga, Festus Keyamo, Femi Fani-Kayode, Dele Alake- who are quick to jump against the slightest criticism against their principal have all so far kept studied silence, likely strategising to counter UberFacts as they did when Chimamanda Adichie, celebrated Nigerian author, asked the U.S. president Joe Biden not to congratulate Mr Tinubu on his questionable election victory last week.

“@uberfacts is actually @uberlies,” tweeted @KemPatriot, an APC loyalist. “If you have ever relied on @UberFacts for facts, it’s time to unfollow them, they are a pay per post organisation, who post lies for th (sic) highest bidder.”

Another loyalist of president-elect alleged UberFacts was a propaganda platform, even though the full court documents had since been published by The Gazette.

“We know the mandators and propagandists that convulse on mendacious innuendoes. They are free to bring same as evidence to court. Make I take Uber go check inauguration venue again self, @AdeHardemola quipped. “Awa ti se orire lati ana.”

@Zdenowo claimed the platform published Mr Tinubu’s drug case to gain relevance online.

“They know their audience. They needed the attention of the headless mob to revive their already dead page. I didn’t even bother reading the story because I know their game plan. Yeye people,” they tweeted.

“Yeye people” means unserious people in the Yoruba language.

Despite the certified true copies of his money forfeiture already in the public domain, Mr Tinubu insists he has no criminal record when he registered his presidential ambition with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) last year.

The president-elect, all through his campaign, avoided talks regarding his haunting criminal past and his supporters flay anyone or groups who bring up the matter.

“Nonsense. That is my reaction,” Mr Onanuga told The Gazette Monday afternoon. “They keep recycling this matter. Who is Uber! Who is Uber! Please don’t spoil my day,” he stressed as he dismissed the matter.

Meanwhile, the battle for positions in the incoming government is already stoking tension in the party.

In many states including Delta, Abia, Enugu, among others, some chieftains have either been expelled or suspended.

In Delta, Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Lauretta Onochie and the governorship candidate of APC, Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege were suspended.

In Abia, ex-Deputy Governor Chris Akomas; ex-Minister of State for Solid Minerals, Uche Ogah; ex-Pro-chancellor, University of Calabar, Senator Nkechi Nwaogu; Executive Secretary, National Land Development Agency, NALDA, Paul Ikonne; Hon. Sam Onuigbo and others were suspended.

In Enugu, former governor Sullivan Chime, Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, VON, Osita Okechukwu, to mention a few, were expelled, while Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, among others were suspended for alleged anti-party activities.

Reacting to his suspension, Okechukwu said “The story of my kinsman Ugo Agbala is the story of a failed chairman quarrelling with himself. He came from PDP akin to a political bandit and hijacked our great party with the assistance of His Excellency, Hope Uzodinma, governor of Imo State.

“He drove all the stakeholders away and boasted he will quadruple the 56,000 we scored in the 2019 presidential election. Regrettably, he scored abysmally only 4,722. Instead of apologising, I cited his CV flying around at the president-elect’s house and APC headquarters.

“This is why he is telling childish lies against some of us who are foundation members of APC, who sold the only plot of land in Enugu during my gubernatorial election in 2011. Ironically then Agbala was in the comfort zone of PDP, while we were constructing the APC structure,” he added.
